We were off Iona on the early ferry and not booked on the Craignure ferry till about 4.00pm, so giving us a few hours on Mull. If you only a few hours on Mull then best to had round to Loch na Keal for as good a chance of White-tailed Eagles as anywhere, as they tend to sit out on the skerries with a recent catch.
We were luckily enough, though, to actually see our first one soon after we’d landed on Mull, the Pennyghael road on the shores of Loch Scridain being another hotspot, It’s also as good a place to catch up with otters, but not so on this occasion.
It’s a great run over to Lock na Keal from Fionnphort but takes a wee while too! So a packed lunch overlooking Scarisdale Rocks and soon I was on to a couple of White-tailed Eagles, an adult and a younger bird.
The young bird is on the left here with the adult on the rightThe young takes flight with its catchThe young bird, not as yet showing the classic white on its tailAlso known as a Sea Eagle, the young bird here flies up the loch and out towards the seaSoon after the adult bird takes flight, interesting to see the size comparison here with the Hooded Crows which are not ‘small birds’
The adult, showing its full white tail, follows the youngster down the lochLoch Scridain, looking out towards the seaOur lunch spot, the eagles were on the edge of the foreshoreBoarding the Craignure ferry back to ObanWe were fortunate to have good visibility on the ferry back to Oban, here looking up Loch Linnhe to Ben NevisA little closer to Oban, looking towards Ben Cruachan on the left and Stob Daimh to the right
