Luing Day 4 – Part 3 – The End of the Day

The slipway at Cuan, waiting to get to Luing

It had rained all day and it was no different as we boarded the five minute ferry across the Cuan Sound and back to Luing. As we headed to Cullipool, our base for the week, the sky began to break and the rain stopped.

Throughout our time up in the ‘Slate Islands’ we tried to get back to Cullipool for the last hour, to catch whatever the dying light of the day had to offer. On this occasion, as on our second evening, another classic Luing sunset, but this time with a difference. For just a moment the elusive ‘green flash’ that can appear above the sun just as it sets came and went. It’s caused by particular atmospheric conditions, which don’t often coalesce, I’ve seen it three times with lots of looking!
