Back to The Bay at the Back of the Ocean
Lingering at the Bay at the Back of the Ocean (so called because it is right at the back of the Atlantic Ocean, if you start out from America!) before heading back to the ‘Village’ brought some good birds.
The sea was beginning to run well now and the golf course Machair held Twite, Skylark and ‘Hoodies’ with a passing Wheatear making an appearance.
There was time after tea to walk down onto the Sound of Iona as the light took on a beautiful soft pastel hue and the stillness came upon the island again.
From the Sound of Mull with it’s pastel hues I turned to the west to catch the last of the sun as it set over the island, half wishing I was back at the Bay at the Back of the Ocean to catch the full glory of a Hebridean sunset!
At night the Island losses all its feeling of a ‘tourist attraction’ with people making the daily journey from Oban to Iona having departed. Here was a stillness to be soaked up before another day of foreign tourists. The beauty of staying on the island was the peace it offered in the early morning and late evening. Having said this there was always quiet to be found once you walked out of the ‘Village’ to the remote corners of this very special place.
