Industrial Landscapes of South Wales: 3

The third area we’ve taken students to recently is Trefil Quarry, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

It’s a landscape all of its own and has been used to film episodes of Dr.Who and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy; not hard to see why, as in places it’s more planet like than anywhere else I’ve ever been to. The images here were taken over a couple of visits in differing lighting conditions.

Just down the road from this extraordinary place is another little gem, Bute Town. This was a planned new town development built in the early nineteenth century and represented a radical change in housing conditions at the time. A local industrialist, Richard Johnson believed that workers should be housed in attractive and cleaner properties. It was intended that a far larger development would take place but Johson’s death left the project unfinished and this curious experiment remains intact in the Upper Rhymney Valley and well worth a visit
